Title I Parent and Family Engagement Policy

Franklin Discovery Academy recognizes the importance of parental engagement in the overall success of our students. Parents partner with the school to help our students achieve academically. Parents also partner with the school to develop this policy.  As a Title 1 Targeted Assistance School, we must create and support a strong parent-school partnership. 

Franklin Discovery Academy will involve parents in developing its LEA plan. Parents will be invited to participate in the development of the school plan at yearly Title 1 planning meetings to be held at the beginning of the school year. Parents will be notified of these meetings at the Title 1 Orientation Night to be held in conjunction with the regular back to school night at the beginning of the school year. Parents will suggest and formulate changes or updates to the Title 1 plan with the school administration so that the plan is developed jointly. The final plan will be approved by the school board. 

Franklin Discovery Academy will involve parents in the school review and improvement process. Achievement data will be shared with parents through newsletters, emails, and the school report card. The school also holds parent teacher conferences two times per year.  These conferences are scheduled to accommodate parent schedules and Spanish translation is provided as necessary. Parents are invited to give input regarding the academic goals of the school. The school will discuss the evidence based instructional practices used. Parents are also welcome to give direction in securing additional evidence based curriculum materials that align with academic goals. 

Annual evaluation of the content and effectiveness of the parent and family engagement policy will occur after sending the annual parent survey.  The annual parent survey will include questions seeking feedback regarding:

  1. barriers to engagement of parents and families (especially families who are economically disadvantaged, disabled, of limited English or literacy proficiency, or of any racial or ethnic minority.)
  2.  needs that parents and families have that may prevent them from helping with their children’s learning and from engaging with school staff.
  3.  strategies to support successful family-school interactions

At the yearly Title 1 planning meeting prior to Back to School Night, administration and parents will review survey findings.  Based on the survey findings and parent feedback, current strategies will be refined or designed using evidence from all available resources. The family engagement policy will then be updated and revised as necessary.

Franklin Discovery Academy will provide coordination and technical assistance to promote quality parental engagement activities. Effective parent engagement strategies will be taught during teacher and administration professional development.  The school will educate teachers and staff on the value of parent contributions by creating a parent-led session during professional development week to address how to work with parents as equal partners and improve communication. Parent newsletters will also request parent input on making the classroom and school more welcoming to parents.  

Parents will be included in school discussion about the effective use of resources. The school will strive to have engagement of the FSO and listen to parent feedback.

School Report Card

The school report card will be posted on the school website when available. It will also be sent to all parents by email and aspects of the report card will be explored during the Title 1 Orientation Night.
