Field Trip Engage Teacher
I am very excited for the opportunity to be part of the movement towards personalized learning. I was thrilled to learn about the model that has been created at Franklin Discovery Academy and desired to become part of the organization since learning about it. I believe firmly in the concepts of blended learning and that play is a necessary part of a child’s education. Some of the best and most authentic learning is accomplished through play. I believe our model will help children develop the skills they will need to be successful in life, and that our model will also meet the concept of one of my beliefs that education is to “prepare the child for the path, not the path for the child.” I cannot imagine a better model for learning than what has been set up at Franklin Discovery Academy. My path in education started at Weber State University when I completed my bachelor’s degree in physical education. I also minored in health and Spanish. I then taught PE, health, and Spanish for 4 years at an alternative school in Evanston, Wyoming. I was able to put an outdoor recreational focus into my PE classes, which allowed me to take kids outdoors and show them the enjoyment that can be found in nature. I then obtained my master’s degree from Western Governors University in Educational Leadership and have spent the last 4 years as an administrator of the same alternative school, where I have been able to implement the concepts of blended and personalized learning. I have been blessed to marry my best friend and blessed with four beautiful children. Being a husband and father has given me the greatest joy in my life. We love spending time together and visiting new places. Exploring new places and being outdoors with my own kids allows the kid in me to reappear, and reminds me that learning can occur anywhere, and at any time.
