Joelyn Miyashiro

1st Grade Teacher

The poet William Butler Yeats said, “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” I was “ignited” by my 4th grade teacher who instilled in me the joy and excitement in the journey of learning. She also helped me to unravel my uniqueness in my learning and I want to do that for my students!

Aloha! My name is Joelyn (Joey) Haaheo Miyashiro, and as you may recognize from my greeting, I was born and raised on the island of Oahu in Honolulu, Hawai’i. My ethnicity is Native Hawai’ian, Irish, English and Chinese. I have five grown children (keikis) and five grandchildren (mo’opunas).I obtained my formal post-high school education from Brigham Young University (Hawaii Campus) and the University of Hawai’i, Manoa campus, receiving a Bachelors of Ed in Physical Education (K-12) and a Special Education endorsement. Later, I received a Highly Qualified Elementary Education teacher (K-6) endorsement.

Right out of college I secured a teaching position as a Physical Education instructor for a private school of 350 students. I felt the need to incorporate a Health Education component for the 7th and 8th graders, so I designed a curriculum. Ten years later, wanting to get back into the classroom, and as the State Department of Education was looking to fill a huge void of Special Education teachers, I embarked on a new journey, and started to take Special Education classes at the University of Hawai’i. Within a couple of years I got the training necessary to be endorsed in Special Education.and spent the next 25+ years teaching students in all curriculum areas including Social Studies, Science, Language Arts and Math at the elementary, middle school and high school as a resource and inclusion teacher.

Moving to Utah with my daughter’s family has been a blessing. The “fire” that was ignited many years ago by my favorite teacher has been “fueled” by finding Franklin Discovery Academy, with it’s unique learning design. I hope that I too, may be able to instill joy and excitement and unravel your child’s uniqueness in their learning. l happily and excitedly look forward to meeting you all in the many splendid learning opportunities planned at Franklin Discovery Academy!

Me ke aloha pumehana (With warm regards)!
